Fast-er Food March

by Lauren Mote

Although meeting friends to catch-up is a great reason to have a cheap and cheerful lunch, I am always excited to: try places I haven’t tried before, and eat food I wouldn’t normally eat before an afternoon of “meetings” …if you know what I mean… but today especially, I was summoned by the thought of having a bottomless cup of hot chai tea, and well executed, inexpensive “modernized” Indian food at Rangoli, next to Vij’s on 13th at Granville.

My good friend Carole was the purpose of this lunch date, and Rangoli’s plates are perfect to share – we can easily be in and out for under $40, and be fully satisfied top to bottom.

Local goat meat and jackfruit curry (jackfruit being the largest tree born tropical fruit, an acquired taste and can weigh up to 80 lbs!), served with coconut cabbage salad and naan, alongside the spicy pulled pork on sauteed greens with sour cream chutney and chapati (chapatis are made from a dough consisting of a whole grain durum wheat flour called “atta flour”, water and salt; it’s rolled extremely thin, and held over an open flame for about 30 seconds). The food is interesting; new exotic flavours are mixed with traditional Indian spices, and it’s light enough to entice the “west coast” diet so-to-speak.

Good food always make for great company and vice-versa.

Reservations not required, but recommended.
